The Help - Kathryn Stockett
This year, I set myself a challenge to read 12 books in a year. Then, after 6 months, I realised that I’d reached my target of reading 12 books, and upped my game to 24 books in a year. This is the 17th book I read. My other reviews are also on this blog.
I didn’t really want to read this book, if I’m honest, but SO many people had read it and enjoyed it, so I jumped on the bandwagon. This year seems to be the year of reading books that are about to be turned into films - The Help is no exception.
The story follows Aibileen and Minny, black women who work as maids in a segregationist Mississippi in the 1960s. It also follows the story of Skeeter, a young budding journalist who feels more at home with the Help than her contemporaries. The book tells the story through the perspective and the voices of the three main characters, which gets a thumbs up from me. The characters are rich, honest and funny, and I very easily got wrapped up in the storyline. It’s a quick read which made me laugh, squirm and stay up late to find out what happens. Unlike a lot of books, it deserves the hype.
